Exeter Golf and Country Club’s rising star Harrison Greenberry has reached new heights becoming the Boys Amateur Champion at Burnham and Berrow. Greenberry is the first Devon boy to win the title since 1981, and at 17 years old, already has a list of prestigious wins under his belt. He set a new course record of 62 at Exeter Golf and Country Club with his win at the Stableford competition earlier this year. With a handicap of plus one, Greenberry has surpassed levels of golf expected for his age group, and now has the lowest handicap at the club and one of the lowest in Devon as a whole. As the 85th Boys Amateur Championship final gathered intensity between Greenberry and Patrick Kelly of Lincolnshire, so did the weather with winds of 25 miles per hour making scoring on to win, joining the ranks of an elite group of former champions including Adrian Otaegui of Spain, Maximilian Rottluff of Germany, Michael Bonallack, Mark Mouland, Ronan Rafferty, Jose Maria Olazabal, David Howell, Sergio Garcia and Tom Lewis. Harrison is in his first year at Exeter College where he is studying for A Levels.
He has been playing golf since 2003, when age 9 he started playing with his dad, who is also a keen golfer. Despite recently moving to Torquay, Harrison has continued to play at Exeter Golf and Country Club due to his love of the course, the club’s dedication to young golfers and the fact it can be played all year round. Russell Mayne, Head of Golf at Exeter Golf and Country Club said, “We are incredibly proud to have Harrison playing golf at our club. Our golf section and Golf Pro have seen him blossom over the past few years and to now have him playing alongside our adult golf players is a fantastic achievement. “A 17 year old to having such a low handicap and to be setting records at a golf club with a history as long as ours is truly something to be very proud of and now with this fantastic win at Burnham and Berrow, we know that we have a golfer who is incredibly special and exceptionally talented.
We are incredibly proud that Harrison is a member of our club and an inspiration to all our junior players.” Harrison plays golf a number of times a week and hopes to reach the top of the amateur game before considering his future within the professional ranks.
