Join our Senior Management Team as a Financial Controller.

We are looking for an experienced Financial Controller to join the management team at Exeter Golf and Country Club. Ideally, the Financial Controller will have experience working in a hospitality business and be able to motivate across the various departments in the club to deliver profitability through product and people.

 

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum qualification: AAT level 4

Desired qualification: ACCA, ACA or CIMA or someone that has experience as an FC or accounts department manager and is studying towards getting one of those qualifications (ACCA, ACA, CIMA).

 

KEY COMMUNICATION SKILLS

The FC must be able to communicate openly and clearly both verbally and in writing. A confidant public speaker, the FC regularly presents at Board level meetings, to the management and external agencies.

Working across various departments, it is essential that the FC pitches information at the appropriate level, while listening and developing positive relationships with team members to motivate and inspire colleagues. As a senior manager, the FC must manage conflict effectively and be sensitive towards others, while having the confidence to present powerful, persuasive arguments to gain commitment to action from a range of people.

Regularly reviewing cost control, payroll and forecasting with department heads to achieve budgets is central to the role of FC.

 

FINANCIAL SKILLS

The FC must be comfortable analysing data and sales figures to agree and implement actions to improve financial practices of the club. They must also be confident in ensuring the implementation of good financial practice across departments when dealing with financial transactions and accounts information.

Ensure customers are contacted when a financial concern has been raised, including timely management of overdue accounts.

Oversee the work carried out by the Accounts team including a number of specific areas under their control such as; daily banking, invoice processing, income audit/review, month-end processing and payroll.

Collecting and analysing relevant and accurate information about a problem and seeking innovative solutions is essential – along with contingency planning.

Maintain in-depth technical knowledge and skills required for the job.

 

REPORTING

Manage all aspects of club accounting routines to ensure timely production of financial management information, including profit and loss, daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting processes, along with adhoc reports.

Deliver budget, forecast and plans in conjunction with the General Manager, forecasting income for functions and membership sales and ensuring departments have and utilise up-to-date financial information, analysing variances to budget and forecast, and initiating appropriate action plans.

The FC is responsible for managing the annual budget process, including the annual year end process in liaison with auditors if required. Ensure delivery of all company statutory accounts to the required legislative standard – specifically, Monthly Accounts, Year End, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow & VAT returns.

 

MANAGEMENT

Manage a small team, setting and striving to achieve performance standards, managing time and resources effectively and leading the team to plan and implement work in a systematic way to completion.

Initiative, personal responsibility and decision making are essential qualities along with the ability to review, innovate and move the company forward – taking calculated risks when necessary.

Carry out selection interviews and make effective recruitment decisions when required, ensure training, orientation and ongoing reviews and assessments are carried out to ensure compliance with all personnel practices and procedures.
