Devon Golf Boys Team is celebrating a historic win at the England Golf ‘Boys’ County Championships’. Seven of Devon’s best junior golfers, including five members of Exeter Golf and Country Club, competed in England Golf’s biggest junior team event, with the final taking place on Thursday 29th August.
Exeter Golf and Country Club had a strong presence at the championships, with three home club members in the Devon team plus another two who are ‘second club’ members.
Darren Everett, Director of Golf at Exeter Golf and Country Club said, “On behalf of everyone at Exeter Golf and Country Club, I want to congratulate all the Devon Golf team on winning this prestigious title. Having seen these junior golfers develop over the past few years, I know how hard they have worked. This is a win which makes the whole county proud. Exeter Golf and Country Club is especially proud of our junior golfers, James Reed, Jack Jeffery and Fred Bishop, and our ‘second club’ members, Dave Baldwin and Matt Millar, for their unwavering commitment to golf and to each other as a team.”
The Boys’ County Championships started in 1986 and this is the first time Devon has won, having come close a number of times before. This year’s final took place at North Foreland in Kent.
Devon won their opening two matches against Kent and Northamptonshire 5-4 and then halved on the final day with pre-tournament favourites Lancashire to claim a famous victory in the event.
The event was played in a round robin match play format over the past three days, with each individual match decided on the outcome of three foursomes in the morning and six singles in the afternoon. Each county entered a team of seven players with any six of them being eligible to play in both the foursomes and the singles.
