Devon Junior Squash Championships Weekend

Match report by Men’s Squash Captain, Jon Sharpe

The Devon Junior Squash Championships took place on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th September, with a lots of representation from Exeter Golf & Country Club’s junior section. There was some super squash on display, from the smallest kids through to the nearly adults!

Mike’s junior academy of players were out in force, displaying some fantastic skills and picking up some major titles, as is the tradition within our club!

At the very youngest age group, the mixed U9’s, Max Webber won the title with some super play throughout the weekend, just pipping Ralph Van Zijl. No doubt some great battles for the future with these two!

Ellie Sharpe, played up an age group to win the Girls U13 title, winning a very entertaining final with both players full of smiles throughout (how it should be).

Yasmin Brown played excellent to finish Runner Up in the Girls U17’s, with her sister, and junior coach, Lauren Brown playing a great brand of laid back, calculated squash to win the Girls U19 title.

The Boys U19 final was a family encounter, pitched between Exeter Golf & Country Club’s Ioan Sharpe, who is also a junior coach, and Newton Abbot’s Billy Whalley. They’ve contested every final against each other since they were 7 years old! Ioan retained the title he won last year with a 3-0, but well contested,  final which drew big crowds.

Thanks to Mike Harris for organising and running the event and for being the personal assistant and diary organiser for most of the kids over the weekend! And thanks to the parents for keeping cool and well behaved in the caldron of junior squash!
