Exeter Golf and Country Club Men’s 1st Squash team are champions of both the Devon Squash League Title and the Devon Squash Cup for the third year running.
The Exeter squash team first won both championships back in 2016, creating history as the first team to ever win both Devon titles.
Both the Devon Cup and the Devon League finals took place on Thursday 18th April at Devon and Exeter Squash Club. This year’s new format with both finals on the same date led to a huge amount of pressure on the squash teams.
With a full team line up on both sides, the events got off to an exciting start.
First up were number 4 and 5 players on adjacent courts. Gary Bennett at 5 for Exeter Golf and Country Club and Josh Morris at 4. Gary used all his experience to get past a tricky opponent while still carrying an injury 3/1. He has been very unlucky with his injury issues this season, but pulled it out of the bag when the team needed it most! Josh then doubled the Exeter Golf and Country Club overall lead with a shock 3/2 win against a strong and in form opponent. A fantastic effort considering he has lost to the player several times this season.
With Exeter Golf and Country Club 2/0 up overall, things were looking good, but the Devon and Exeter Squash Club pulled two ties back with Sam Price losing a physically brutal match 3/2 at Number 3, and the Mike Gregory going down 3/2 in a typically entertaining and exciting battle at Number 2. Both of these ties were great matches and both players threw everything into it, but both just came up short in the end.
At 2/2 in the fixture it then came down to the Number 1s, Mike Harris for Exeter Golf and Country Club against perennial rival James Snell for the Devon and Exeter. With the match going on court last at 10pm, and the packed out home crowd in full voice, the pressure on the two players was huge. While both were quite nervy to start, Harris rode his luck and stayed just solid enough to see the first two games off 11/8, 11/9. After being able to scrape through these two without dropping a set, he then was able to relax a bit more and start to play his natural game, running through the 3rd 11/1 to take the tie and therefore the whole fixture for Exeter Golf and Country Club!
Mike Harris, Squash Professional at Exeter Golf and Country Club said, “It couldn’t have been closer overall on the night and it was a brilliant display of Devon League Squash from both sides from start to finish. Exeter Golf and Country Club therefore are the Devon League and Cup Champions for the third year in a row, something never before achieved by any club in the county’s history. A triple double!
“Huge congratulations and thanks to the guys who did the business on the night, and indeed the other main squad members who contributed throughout a long season.”
