Double Devon squash win for second year

For the first time ever, the Devon Squash League and Devon Squash Cup have been won by the same team, for the second consecutive year.

Exeter Golf and Country Club Men’s 1st Squash Team wrapped up the season by winning the Devon Squash Cup Final on Thursday 29th March following their victory the previous week, at the final of the Devon Squash League.

As this is the second year Exeter Golf and Country Club’s Men’s Team has won the double, they are officially Devon’s only reigning champions for two squash seasons in a row.

Mike Harris, Squash Professional at Exeter Golf and Country Club said,
“This win was especially sweet, coming against long time rivals Devon and Exeter Squash Club who have regularly proved to be incredibly tough opponents. I am so proud of all the squash and racketball teams at Exeter Golf and Country Club. This win is a huge motivation for all our players.  Squash really is a growing sport at our club, and it is going from strength-to-strength.”

The Devon Squash Cup Final looked to be a very tight match on paper, however the team from Exeter Golf and Country Club managed to come out on top with a 5/0 win.

Mike Gregory bt Dan Macdonald 3/0
Gary Bennett bt Luke Howells 3/0
Josh Morris bt Jack Newey 3/2
Simon Irvin bt Andy Thomas 3/1

Despite the overall match score seeming clear cut, there were some really tight battles on the night. Win of the day must be given to Josh Morris who overcame a 5th game deficit (7/3 down) to grind out a well deserved victory.

Mike continued, “Thanks must go to the home crowd who turned out in force to spur the team on. It was great to have a packed balcony for the night! You can really feel the support down on the court. I think this is one of the reasons why squash is becoming so popular again…it combines a high level of fitness with competition and most importantly, a huge amount of social interaction. We are lucky to have such a thriving squash club at Exeter Golf and Country Club with lots of friendly socials as well as matches and competitive challenges.”

With the end of another successful season under their belt, the teams at Exeter Golf and Country Club thanked their team sponsors, Maze Property, RKR Sports, Realistic Windows and ICE Technology.
