The successful start to the winter tennis season continued on Monday for Exeter Golf and Country Club with both the Men’s and Ladies’ tennis A teams winning their matches.
The ladies, looking to continue their unbeaten start to the winter season, travelled to Sidmouth. Captain Emily Rushen partnered Juliet Chenery and won both rubbers 6-0 7-5. Amanda Goodison and Anne Bulman also won both matches in straight sets to secure a convincing 8-0 win.
Combined with an 8-1 victory against Seaton and a 4-4 draw away at last year’s runners-up Victoria Park, it’s been a strong start to the season for the ladies.
The men’s A team are looking to win the division 1 title for the fifth successive season. Tipton St. John were the visitors for their first match of the winter. Adam Tapp and James Walsh had a long battle with the Tipton first pair, Pete Clarke and Simon Hopper. They were taken to a deciding championship tie-break after splitting the opening two sets 7-6 5-7. After two hours on court they prevailed 10-6.
Adam and James then beat the second pair 6-4 6-3. With the other Exeter Golf and Country Club pairing of James Temple and Chris Harris-Dean winning both matches in straight sets, an 8-1 victory got the team off to the perfect start.
