Doubles is Back!

May 31, 2020 | James Temple

It’s been great to see so many members taking advantage of the fantastic weather back out on the tennis courts over the last weeks. Following the government announcement on Thursday, the LTA have announced a series of changes to the guidelines. Important changes include:

  • Doubles with different households is now permitted
  • You no longer have to use your own, initialled balls

You must always maintain social distancing and use appropriate hygiene measures (including use of the hand sanitiser by the entrance to the courts).

Please ensure that you read the full guidelines below. These are effective from Monday 1st June.

We’re also pleased to be able to open the courts to all members. Please check the information below to read how to book/pay for courts.

There will be marshals present when you turn up to play. They will ask to check the names on your court booking so please bring your membership card (preferable) or another form of ID. Please follow all instructions delivered by the marshals.

We will take appropriate action against any member not abiding by these guidelines, as they are in place for the safety of our members and staff.

If you develop symptoms of COVID-19, you should not play and should follow the Government’s ‘test and trace’ guidelines, which can be read on the Gov.uk website.

TENNIS ACTIVITY

Both singles play and doubles play is now permitted with people from outside of your household, as long as you remain 2 metres apart as far as possible – meaning that four people from different households can now play doubles.

Coached sessions are limited to groups of no more than 6 people, including the coach(es).

BOOKINGS

Online or app bookings only for courts and sessions. Bookings must be made in advance. You cannot just turn up and play. Each session is for 1 hour 15 minutes.

Court booking times:

  • 8.00am-9.15am
  • 9.30am-10.45am
  • 11.00am-12.15pm
  • 12.30pm-1.45pm
  • 2.00pm-3.15pm
  • 3.30pm-4.45pm
  • 5.00pm-6.15pm
  • 6.30pm-7.45pm

There is a 15 minute buffer period between court/session booking slots to allow players to leave before the next players arrive. Please ensure you arrive on time and leave immediately after to enable this buffer to remain in tact, limiting numbers of people on the courts and surrounding areas.

Each court booking will cost £5, to be split between the members named on the booking. All names of members taking part (2 for singles and 4 for doubles) must be listed. If a member does not appear when booking online then they will need to make themselves visible (follow the instructions here). Payments will be taken after the booking from member accounts. Please use the app to ensure that you have enough money to cover the court booking and to top-up your account when necessary.

This fee is in lieu of membership fees which are not currently active whilst the rest of the club remains closed. You must, however, be a member to use the courts.

ALL members are welcome to use the courts for the same fee. Rackets members will be able to book 7 days in advance; club members will have 4 days to book.

COURT ACCESS

For tennis, please only use the car park on the right as you arrive at the club. It is often referred to as the ‘Golf Car Park’. Make your way past Wear Park and the Sports Bar to the Tennis Courts entrance. The gate will be open.

Please use the hand sanitizer dispenser at the court entrance before and after play.

Please observe the 2m floor markers and ensure that you observe a strict 2m distance when entering and exiting the courts.

Ensure you spend time reading the safety notices and guidelines within the courts.

The club building will not be open so there are no toilet facilities available, hopefully this might change in the coming weeks.

All furniture has been removed from the courts to prevent unnecessary touching of surfaces.

The pavilion is shut and cannot be used.

SPECTATORS

Spectating is not permitted. Where attendance of a parent/guardian (non-participant) is required, or a carer for a disabled player, it is permitted and is not counted as part of the maximum group size of six, but should be off court and limited to one per player where possible, with social distancing strictly observed while watching the sessions. Please avoid this unless absolutely necessary.

BEFORE LEAVING HOME & AFTER YOU RETURN

Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before leaving home to go to the court (or use an alcohol gel if washing hands is not possible).

EQUIPMENT

Players do not now need to use their own clearly marked tennis balls – however, if you choose to use shared balls then extra care must be taken to ensure you do not touch your face during play, and you should clean your hands before play and immediately after finishing (use alcohol gel if required).

Players should still avoid using their hands to pick up tennis balls from other courts where possible – use your racquet/foot to return them.

Rackets bags and belongings must be placed behind your own baseline.

Bring your own hand sanitizer and use it frequently.

You must bring all your own equipment (do not share equipment such as rackets, grips, hats and towels).

Please only bring the minimum amount of equipment you need to play to avoid clutter.

Clean and wipe down your equipment, including rackets and water bottles before and after use.

Bring a full water bottle, and do not share food or drink with others.

Ensure you take all your belongings with you at the end of the session and do not leave anything on court, including rubbish.

HYGIENE

Hand hygiene is imperative – use alcohol gel to clean your hands after touching a shared surface.

If you need to sneeze or cough, do so into a tissue or upper sleeve.

Avoid touching your face.

MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING

Other than where players are from the same household:

  • Stay at least two metres away from other players (including during play, when taking breaks and before and after play)
  • Do not make physical contact with other players (such as shaking hands or high five)
  • Avoid chasing the ball down to another court if other players are using it
  • [NEW] For doubles, consider agreeing in advance which player will take the shot if a ball travels to the centre of the court
  • For coached sessions, pay careful attention to the instructions of the coach

TRAVELLING TO AND FROM THE COURT

Arrive just before your booking time. We do not want members lingering around the club and courts.

Avoid touching court gates, fences etc. if you can.

Allow others to leave before you enter the court – if you need to wait then do so away from the courts and clear of the gates.

Ensure you leave the court just before the end of your allotted time so that it is empty for the next players.

Arrive changed and ready to play. Shower at home, and do not change on site.

Do not congregate after playing. Sorry but now is not the time to socialise – hopefully that time will come again soon.

COACHING

Coaching sessions are now available for up to 5 people. Individual lessons can be booked by contacting your coach or james.temple@exetergcc.co.uk

All lessons will need to be paid for in advance. This will be through your member account which can be topped up using the app.

Players should bring their own equipment and hand sanitiser.

Social distancing will be adhered to throughout the lessons.

The coaching team will be looking at group sessions which were suspended in March and assessing which they can safely bring back. Please be patient whilst we work through the sessions. If you have any questions then please contact James.
