Exeter Racketball Takes on Fort Stamford

Nov 8, 2016 | Jenni Ashford

Fourth match of the season for the 1st Racketball team sponsored by Nexus was away at Fort Stamford last night. Always keen to get on with business, Mike Gregory our number one went on court first against Jon Gallacher. Moving the ball around the court with confidence and patience, Mike was in control from the start and secured a win 3-0. At five Steve Peake took on Paul Sumner, winning the first game 11-9, Steve then couldn’t get on top and lost 3-1, but a good performance for his first match for the first team. Next on captain Chris Goodwill versus James O’Neil, 14-12 to Chris in the first, he couldn’t repeat the same despite efforts and lost 3-1 to a stronger player. Turning out for the first time at Racketball after a recent injury, Martyn Newberry played at four against Jon Weymouth, three close games but all to his opponent, so a loss 3-0. Final match of the night saw Rob Turl take on Wes Cullen, going one up Rob looked solid but then Wes took the second. Focused on the job as usual, Rob went on to win the next two thereby winning 3-1. So despite a good performance from the team, EGCC lost 3-2 to Fort Stamford, points score 8-15. Great hospitality from the team afterwards as always, we’ll look forward to taking them on again in the Devon Racketball Cup next month. Next match is against Exeter University on Monday 21st November.
