We asked our female golf members a few questions about what got them started, how old they were when they became a golfer and the advice they would give to someone thinking about picking up a club for the first time.
What do you enjoy about playing golf?
97% said it was being outside in the fresh air, with a whopping 91% saying it was spending time with friends. Exercise came in 3rd with 88% and the potential to travel the world to play, 4th with 63%.
How many times a week do you play?
72% said two – three times a week. However, of course, it’s up to the individual, time of year and changes week by week…basically, it’s a flexible game.
Who do you play with?
They’re obviously a friendly bunch…with 90% playing with friends, 45% with their partner and 16% with their children – a couple of hours of uninterrupted mum and child time on the golf course is pretty precious, and great as a shared interest.
The average age for starting to play golf was 42 – however the ages spanned from 14 up to 63!
Some of the ladies have now played for a good 20 years (others for 50!), which proves; it’s addictive!
When asked what got them started, for many it was because their husband, partner or family played…however for some it was a new sport or social scene!
The advice they give to someone thinking about starting golf or joining Exeter Golf and Country Club includes these tips, advice and words of encouragement…
“Fun sport which suits any age and ability”
“Great game, played it for nearly 50 years…very badly!”
“I’m a new member and everyone has been friendly and welcoming.”
“Go ahead. It’s a good way to socialise with friends, and make new ones!”
“Take the leap of faith and join!”
“Have professional lessons, use the practice facilities more than playing on the course to begin with, learn with a friend or partner.”
“Do it as it’s the best thing you’ll ever do.”
“Have a go. It’s a great way of getting exercise with friends and although frustrating, when you get it right, it’s fantastic!”
