The Men’s Racketball Team at Exeter Golf and Country Club are celebrating winning second place in the National Racketball Club Championships and extending the winning streak for racket sports at the Club, after the Squash Team topped the Devon Cup and League Finals earlier this month.
On the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd April the Exeter Golf and Country Club Racketball team travelled up to Birmingham to compete in the National Racketball Club Championships Finals weekend.
Having had a tough draw to get through to this stage, the team were looking to continue their push to the top spot with a Semi Final vs Shrewsbury. Solid performances from the top three of Mike Harris, Mike Gregory and Simon Irvin got them a 3/1 team win with Tim Gillingham narrowly losing out at 4.
They then faced a very strong Surbiton side in the final, who had brought in a top 100 ranked Squash Professional and also the British O35’s National Squash Champion to strengthen their top order. The match started well for Exeter though with Mike Harris winning 3/0 at Number 1 and Tim Gillingham getting a key game in a 3/1 loss at 4. However the Surbiton team’s strength in the middle order told with Simon Irvin and Mike Gregory both losing out 3.0 in some very close encounters.
This therefore meant that Exeter Golf and Country Club finished in second place as runners up with a 3/1 team loss.
Mike Harris, Squash and Racketball Professional at Exeter Golf and Country Club said, “It was a brilliant effort by the side over the course of the weekend and indeed the competition, with every member of the squad contributing to the team’s results. Second top side in the country is not a bad effort at all!
A huge thanks must go to Nexus Open Systems for sponsoring the side for this season, their support is greatly appreciated and long may it continue.”
