Nexus Junior Devon Tennis Tour

The inaugural event in the Nexus Junior Tennis Tour took place at Exeter Golf and Country Club on Saturday 19th January. Developed in a partnership between Devon Tennis and Nexus Open Systems, the new circuit aims to provide more matchplay opportunities for 12U and 16U players across the county.

It was the younger age group who started the tour with a full draw of 16 players taking to the court. Using the Fast4 scoring format, 24 matches took place throughout the afternoon. The first round set the tone with two matches going the distance and being decided by sudden death points in a Championship tie-break. Sam Ayer (South Devon Tennis Centre) edged the battle against Phoebe Hughes (Tarka Tennis Centre) whilst two players from the host venue played out the longest match of the event with Oli Clayton eventually prevailing against Freddie Swannell, 4-2 2-4 10-9.

Gaining points towards the Nexus leaderboard for each match played and won, four players came away with the maximum 150 points after winning all of their games. Well done to Remy Wilson (Exeter Golf and Country Club), Lewis Critchley (Tavistock Tennis Club), Sam Hargreaves (South Devon Tennis Centre) and Bryn Jeffrey.

Stuart Wilson, Managing Director of Nexus, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed watching all of the matches and found myself chatting to some of the parents. It was particularly noticeable that they all welcomed the opportunity presented by the Nexus Tour for their children to participate at this level of play. Many of the matches were very close and it was nice to see representation from 11 clubs.

“A big thank you to Sam Ayer for stepping in to offer a very late match against Sam Hargreaves when everyone else had finished. It turned out to be a great match between the two Ivybridge players.

“I was impressed by how smoothly everything ran and would like to thanks James Temple and Exeter Golf and Country Club for giving Nexus Open Systems the opportunity to sponsor these junior events. I’m already looking forward to the next event for 16U boys on 26th January”.
