The inaugural Nexus Junior Tennis Tour came to a conclusion on Saturday afternoon as the top 8 players in the 12U and 16U age groups from across Devon were invited to Exeter Golf and Country Club for the Tour Finals. The new circuit, set-up in a partnership between Devon Tennis and Nexus Open Systems, aims to provide more competitive opportunities for juniors in the county. It was fitting that as the summer season begins, the final event of the winter season was played out under glorious sunshine for most of the afternoon.
The 12U event saw the top two seeds progress to the final where Arthur Hutchings (Exmouth), who had remained unbeaten throughout the circuit, defeated Lewis Critchley (Tavistock). It was the plate event which saw the tightest matches with both semi-finals decided 10-8 in championship tie-breaks. The final saw Ashley Smith (Exeter GCC) play Ryan Gagg (Tarka) with the latter prevailing 4-2 4-2.
The semi-finals of the 16U event were both very close encounters. Sam Wilton-Davies beat Marcus Kay 3-4 4-2 10-4 in a battle between two Exeter Golf and Country Club juniors. The second semi-final featured two players who were yet to be beaten in the circuit and came down to a deciding point in the championship tie-break with Troy Lambourne (St Budeaux) overcoming Noah Kerley (Exeter GCC) 0-4 4-3 10-9. The final saw Troy beat Sam 4-2 4-2.
The finals were watched by David Vinall, the Chairman of Devon Tennis, and Stuart Wilson, the Managing Director of Nexus who also oversaw the trophy presentation, stating that “for us at Nexus, this is a great opportunity to support local sport in the form of junior tennis and hopefully encourage more children to play this great sport! It has been very well supported with so many positive comments from parents again today. Our congratulations go to all the players who’ve made it to today’s finals, regardless of where they placed by the end of the competition. The standard of play was excellent again”.
With over 100 entries in the first three months, the Nexus Tour continues into the summer season with more events for 12U and 16U players. For more information, please visit Visit Nexus Junior Tennis Facebook Page
