Exeter Golf and Country Club played their 1st round of the Devon Golf Palairet Trophy at Dainton Park against Staddon Heights Golf Club on Sunday 6th May. The course was presented in great condition on a very warm bank holiday weekend.
Darren Thorpe and Lyndon Bent put a strong team out with plenty of experience and all players were heading into the event in form.
The team consisted of:
Match 1 – Neil Woolfrey and James Read
Match 2 – Simon House and Harrison Greenberry
Match 3 – George Robinson and Tom Partridge
Match 4 – Stuart Jose and Lewis Beer
Match 5 – Jack Jeffery and Colin Papworth
The matches got underway and were all extremely close throughout and the result could have swung either way. Match 1 went up early but were quickly pegged back. After winning the 7th to return to all square the Staddon pair holed a long putt on the 8th hole to go 1 up. They didn’t relinquish their lead and closed out the match 2&1 to get the first point on the board for the Plymouth club.
Match 2 looked to be in trouble over the opening holes and after going 2 down through 11 Exeter played some great golf which saw the deficit turned around and into a 2 up victory.
Match 3 started off well for Exeter however George and Tom fell 3 down through 11. A fightback was too much and they unfortunately fell to a 4&3 loss.
Match 4 saw Exeter up for most of the game with only a hole in it at any one time. Junior golfer Lewis Beer partnering Stuart Jose managed to hold on over the closing 3 holes to claim a 1 up win for Exeter.
Match 5 had youth and experience on their side with youngster Jack Jeffery and County Senior Colin Papworth in the final match. They got 2 up early in the match and were never behind. However they stood on the 18th tee 1 up with one hole to play. The match stood at 2-2 and after Jack hit his tee shot down the right hand side into the semi Colin was able to find the back edge of the 18th green. The Staddon pair played the hole well and had a 10 foot putt for par. Jack Jeffery had a tricky putt with the golf ball against the collar of the green and left Colin around 12 feet to win the match. With around 50 spectators around the 18th green Colin managed to hole the putt which gave Exeter a 3-2 win.
Congratulations to team who now face Torquay Golf Club at Dartmouth on Sunday 3rd June.
