The 43rd annual charity Pro-Am at Exeter Golf and Country Club on Sunday 1st September 2019.
With 47 teams taking part, the Pro-Am is always a popular event in the Devon golf calendar, this year raising money for Rainbow Living.
On the course, the greens were running true, and the wind was swirling which made it tricky in places, however it did not deter the players and the day featured two double bogeys, an albatross and a hole in one.
Out on a favourable tee time (given to him by his boss), Dave Cockayne signed for a stunning 6 under par 63 to take 1st place. The reception he received at presentation showed what a popular winner he was. In the runners up spot in the winners of the ‘professionals individual’ event were Mike Watson and Richard O’Hanalon who shot 5 under par 64.
In the team event, a 16 under par total by the team from St Kew took top spot. Runners up on 15 under par were the team led by Exeter’s former Golf Pro Assistant James Maxwell with Paul Naden, Aaron Lee and Jack Moxey. Martin Pitcher, James Delve, Dave Hancock and professional Paul Hendrikson were 3rd.
There two outstanding shots that got tongues wagging through the day. Having started with two double bogeys, Ryan holed a 4 iron with his 2nd shot into the par 5 3rd hole for an albatross!
Later in the day, Kevin Harper had a hole in one on the 14th hole as his tee shot found the cup.
Darren Everett, Director of Golf at Exeter Golf and Country Club said, “This year’s Pro Am was a great success. It cannot run without the efforts of a lot of people: the volunteers who gave up their time to ball spot, sell draw tickets and help with the putting competition; all of our sponsors for their generosity and support and for providing the nearest the pin prizes; our Captain, Pete Bennett and his Pro-Am Committee for all the hard work; and of course, all the players and members who supported the day.”
All proceeds made from the event will be donated to the Golf Captains’ charity, Rainbow Living. A team from the charity were on hand all day, helping with the prize draw and supporting the presentation in the evening.
Darren continued, “The golf course was set up superbly by John Parr and his team so a huge thank you to them all for their hard work. The food and service was also excellent, so more thanks to Adam Little, Richard Sweeney and the team for looking after all the players.”
The 2020 Pro-Am is moving to a new date – Friday June 12th so we can extend the day and help celebrate our 125th year anniversary as a club.
