Bringing Tennis Back

May 14, 2020 | Jenni Ashford

Following the positive news from the LTA on Tuesday, we’re delighted to announce we are now permitted to reopen the tennis courts.

We were advised to take time to ensure that our courts can reopen safely, rather than rushing, so after a good day of planning and organisation, the courts will reopen at 11.00am on Friday 15th May.

From Saturday onward, they will be open from 8.00am until 7.45pm every day.

Access to the courts is available to rackets members and juniors who have renewed their rackets membership.

The LTA has developed a set of practical guidelines for venues, coaches and players in line with government restrictions and advice. We will be adhering to these and expect all members to commit to them in order to play. The guidelines include measures to limit hand to shared surface contact and minimise unnecessary interactions with others to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

We will take appropriate action against any member not abiding by these guidelines, as they are in place for the safety of our members and staff.

Online or app bookings only for courts and sessions. Bookings must be made in advance. You cannot just turn up and play.

Junior members are welcome to play but must be supervised or must take responsibility for adhering to the safety guidelines and social distancing rules.

There is a 15 minute buffer period between court/session booking slots to allow players to leave before the next players arrive. Please ensure you arrive on time and leave immediately after to enable this buffer to remain in tact, limiting numbers of people on the courts and surrounding areas.

For tennis, please only use the car park on the right as you arrive at the club. It is often referred to as the ‘Golf Car Park’. Make your way past Wear Park and the Sports Bar to the Tennis Courts entrance. The gate will be open.

A hand sanitizer dispenser is available for use at the courts entrance and exit.

ENTRANCE AND EXIT: Please observe the directional signage we have installed – the entrance to the courts is through the opening onto court 3, from here you then walk to your pre booked court. When you have finished your one hour of tennis you must exit the courts through the opening on court 1.

Please observe the 2m floor markers and ensure that you observe a strict 2m distance when entering and exiting the courts.

Ensure you spend time reading the safety notices and guidelines within the courts.

The club building will not be open so there are no toilet facilities available, hopefully this might change in the coming weeks.

All furniture has been removed from the courts to prevent unnecessary touching of surfaces.
The pavilion is shut and cannot be used.

Spectating is not permitted. Where attendance of a parent/guardian (non-participant) or a carer for a disabled player is required, it will be limited to one per player, with social distancing strictly observed while watching the sessions. Please avoid this unless absolutely necessary.

Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before leaving home to go to the court (or use an alcohol gel if washing hands is not possible).

Bring your own hand sanitizer and use it frequently.

You must bring all your own equipment (do not share equipment such as rackets, grips, hats and towels).

Please only bring the minimum amount of equipment you need to play to avoid clutter.

Clean and wipe down your equipment, including rackets and water bottles before and after use.

Bring a full water bottle, and do not share food or drink with others.

Bring your own tennis balls that are clearly marked (e.g. with your initials).

Avoid using your hands to pick up tennis balls that are not yours – use your racket/foot to hit/kick them to your opponent or return them to another court.

Ensure you take all your belongings with you at the end of the session and do not leave anything on court, even rubbish.

Arrive just before your booking time. We do not want members lingering around the club and courts.

Avoid touching court gates, fences etc. if you can

Allow others to leave before you enter the court – if you need to wait then do so away from the courts and clear of the gates.

Ensure you leave the court just before the end of your allotted time so that it is empty for the next players.

Arrive changed and ready to play. Shower at home, and do not change on site.

Do not congregate after playing. Sorry but now is not the time to socialise – hopefully that time will come again soon.

Maximum of two people per court (singles play only). Players can be from different households maintaining social distancing at all times.

The only exception to the above is where a group of four players are all from the same household in which case, they can play doubles e.g. a family of four.

Coached sessions will be limited to one to one coaching activity only.

Stay at least two metres away from other players at all times (including during play, when taking breaks and before and after play).

Do not make physical contact with other players (such as shaking hands or high five).

Stay on your side of court and avoid changing ends, or agree to change ends at opposite sides of the net.

Avoid chasing the ball down to another court if other players are using it.

Coaching sessions are available but are limited to one to one sessions only.

Social distancing will be adhered to throughout the lesson.

Coaches will use fresh tennis balls for each lesson. Only the coach will be allowed to touch the tennis balls – players should return them using their feet/racket only.

Players should bring their own equipment and hand sanitiser.

You can book sessions directly through your coach or by contacting

All lessons will need to be paid for in advance. This will be through your member account which can be topped up using the app.
