South West Girls Inter-Counties Golf Championship

Jul 21, 2017 | Jenni Ashford

The South West Girls’ Inter-Counties Golf Tournament will take place at Exeter Golf and Country Club from Sunday 23rd until 25th July with 48 girls taking part.

Squads of 8 players from the counties of Cornwall, Somerset, Wiltshire, Dorset, Gloucestershire and Devon will be playing in this prestigious women’s golf event.

The girls will be playing singles match-play in teams of 6 selected from the 8 player squads over the three days. With Gloucestershire as reigning champions, the other counties will be stepping up play to steal the trophy.  Gloucestershire will be facing some tough opposition in the 2017 tournament with some emerging top-level female golfers coming up through the ranks.

With the upper handicap limit being 18 and the lowest handicap player playing off +1, the level of golf is expected to be very high. Some of the golfers taking part of them have represented England and are part of the England Golf SW Regional Training Squads for U16 & U18 year olds. A number have also qualified for the England Schools National Championships at The Kendleshire.

With ages ranging from 12 – 18 years old, this golf tournament is set to display some of the best youth golf in the UK.

Each county takes it in turn to host the event. Last year’s South West Girls’ Inter-Counties Tournament was held at Cumberwell Park Golf Club in Wiltshire with the 2018 event due to take place in Gloucestershire at Brickhampton Golf Club.

Exeter Golf and Country Club was selected by the Devon County Ladies’ Golf Association for this year’s tournament. The club will showcase their re-designed golf course, completed in 2016, featuring some challenging play and the region’s most spectacular 18th holes. As one of the county’s longest-established golf courses, Exeter Golf and Country Club offers both prestige as well as a contemporary vision for golf with the new course layout and a thriving, active membership.

Chris Jones, General Manager of Exeter Golf and Country Club said, “To say we are delighted to be hosting this momentous event in the UK’s golf calendar, is an understatement. To have been selected as the host club for this inter-counties girls’ golf event is a huge honour.

“I am sure our members will share our excitement at welcoming some of the most up-and-coming names in women’s youth golf to the club and we hope they enjoy playing the course. It is great to see such dedication to the sport. Women’s golf events like these are inspirational to other young women and will provide momentum to the resurgence of women’s golf we are seeing here at Exeter Golf and Country Club.”

The talented squad chosen to compete for Devon at the Inter Counties Golf Tournament is:
