Exeter Golf and Country Club’s 1st Men’s Squash team are celebrating a victorious season as undefeated champions of the Devon league title.
With 14 wins across the campaign, they will now head into the Devon Cup final against Fort Stamford on 7th April looking to secure the double.
Only twice in the last ten years has the league been won with a 100% record. The Club’s Head Squash and Racketball Professional Mike Harris and Gary Bennett both finished the season with unbeaten records having won 11 and 13 matches respectively. The rest of the squad (Mike Gregory, Pete Joyce, Reuben Morris, Jon Sharpe, Andy Street, Simon Irvin and Robbie Brown) only dropped a handful of points in what was a great team effort.
Jon Sharpe, Men’s Squash Captain said, “Led by world ranked club professional Mike Harris, the men’s 1st team set about rewriting the history books in Devon Premier Squash League after narrowly missing out on the title last season… in the final match! From the very first match of this season we accelerated away from the chasing pack, eventually winning the league on Monday night with a perfect 14-0 undefeated record. The margin of victory over this years runners up was over 50 points (3 matches) and we collected 95% of the total points available. What made this season particularly special is that it was truly a team effort. Two of our players, Mike Harris and Gary Bennet enjoyed unbeaten seasons, with the other players only dropping a handful of points.”
