Sunday 12th May 2019 promises to be a momentous day for junior squash at Exeter Golf and Country Club, when teams from across the South West compete for the first-ever school and club combined squash tournament.
The event has been set up with the aim of building a strong connection between school and club junior squash sides from across the region. This in turn will hopefully lead to more inter-team competitions, helping the development of junior squash in the area. The more young squash players can access competitive squash, the more they development their skills and technique, especially when it brings together players from a large area, who otherwise would never get such an opportunity.
The championship will be hosted mainly at Exeter Golf and Country Club, with additional courts being provided at the Devon and Exeter Squash Club.
The event will welcome 24 teams of 3 players per side from schools and clubs sides from Gloucester, Dorset, Somerset, Cornwall and Devon. The age range of the players is from 9 years old to 18, demonstrating that South West junior squash is a growing sport among young people at the moment.
Mike Harris, Squash Professional at Exeter Golf and Country Club said, “Early event favorites in the A Grade are Wycliffe College, Truro School and Newton Abbot Squash Club, all of whom have some top 30 England ranked junior players in their sides. Exeter Golf and Country Club and Exeter School sides competing in the younger B and C Grades look like providing some local title shots too. It should be a great event with some very closely fought matches across the day. The hope is that we can expand the competition into including more sides next year and possibly even turn it into a full weekend event.”
