Tennis Summer Championships

Aug 8, 2018 | Jenni Ashford

Another successful season draws to an end, with five successful promotions for the tennis teams at Exeter Golf and Country Club. Competing in both the Exeter and District and East Devon leagues, five of the ten teams have secured promotion at the end of a busy summer.

The ladies’ B team, captained by Sue Cloke, were part of a very tight battle for a promotion place in division 2. In the end they finished two points ahead of David Lloyd A and will join the ladies’ A team in division 1 next year.

Back-to-back promotions was the aim for the men’s B team as they look to climb the leagues with a mixture of youth and experience. They won their division for the second successive season and will play in division 3 in 2019.

The men’s D team, captained by Simon Goldsmith, equalled this feat. After gaining promotion from division 8 last year they finished as runners-up in division 7 this term and will be back in division 6 next summer.

The newly entered men’s E team had an interesting debut season with only eight matches being played in a curtailed division 8. Martin James’ team beat closest challengers Sidford 6-3 in their last match of the season to win the division.

There was also success in the mixed league. Chris Goodwill’s B team secured promotion from division 5 by winning all but one of their matches to finish top.

Following the trend of many of the club’s teams, the mixed A team played a blend of adults and juniors and look like finishing as runners-up in division 2. The men’s C team, led by Grant Dee Shapland, also introduced new members to competitive league tennis as they finish the season in division 3 comfortably mid-table.

Attentions now turn to the winter season, before which Exeter Golf and Country Club will host a pre-season tournament on Sunday 9th September.

Any member wishing to play league tennis is welcome to get involved, whatever level they play at. If you’re interested in taking part then please click the link below to contact Head of Rackets, James Temple.
