The Club Talks – World Mental Health Awareness Day

Oct 10, 2019 | Jenni Ashford

Director of Golf, Darren Everett has signed up as an ambassador for the PGA initiative #TheClubTalks’ to help tackle the silent issue of men’s mental health.

On World Mental Health Awareness Day, 10th October, Exeter Golf and Country Club have launched the Pro Shop’s new ‘Beer ‘n’ Balls’ evenings. With an hour of free golf coaching at the Topsham Golf Academy followed by a beer back at the club bar, the two-hour get-together is a chance for men to get away from day-to-day stresses over golf, beer and chat.

The PGA has developed #TheClubTalks scheme to encourage golfers to make the most of the social side of the sport. Golf can be an incredible sport for mental health as it requires calm focus and combines exercise outdoors with a good chat with mates.

Suicide is now the biggest killer of men under the age of 45.

The website #TheClubTalks sums up the reason for the initiative, “We aim to reach young men across the UK both on and offline to normalise discussion about mental health, signposting them to where they can get help if they need it and recruiting and training golf clubs up and down the land to spread the word and deliver specific sessions. Golf is a uniquely incredible sport for mental health as you can read from testimonies on our stories page.”

#TheClubTalks wants to raise £75,000 and train 32 people in Mental Health First Aid by the end of 2019.

The first date for the ‘Beer ‘n’ Balls’ event is Tuesday 29th October, from 6pm – 8pm.
