New Topsham Golf Practice Facility

After almost 90 years at Wear Park, Exeter Golf and Country Club is expanding their golf offering to a new site further along Topsham Road. Work on the new ‘Topsham Golf Practice Facility’ project is underway with global leaders Southwest Greens installing the short game area and putting green, plus a state-of-the-art golf range constructed by Golf Driving Bays.

The ‘Topsham Golf Practice Facility’ is set to be the most unique golf amenity in the South West region in that it will offer the ability to practise all aspects of golf, in all weather, all year round.

The facility will be available for golf members of Exeter Golf and Country Club, and those having coaching with the club’s professional golf team at Darren Everett Pro Shop.

The new golf facility will feature an eight-bay range, plus a dedicated coaching bay. The range will be open from morning until the evening, with Berm lighting to enable year-round use. This ground-mounted lighting system provides multiple lighting spots along the length of the range, while minimising obtrusive light.

In addition to the driving bays, the facility will also feature a short game area modelled on the 18th green at Exeter Golf and Country Club in terms of undulation, shapes and bunker using the same sand as the bunkers on the actual golf course.

The short game area will be constructed from Southwest Green’s advanced Pro System – the industry’s finest artificial grass. The unique Pro System technology truly replicates the response of a natural green, thanks to the shaping design and eight layers of multiple sized crushed stone, shock underlay padding and their trademark turf, topped with silica sand infill.

The Pro System putting surfaces accept all types of shot, with the same spin, roll, and break that would be expected from a tournament green at a championship golf course. Southwest Greens understand the importance of a green being capable of so many elements not just to look good and blend in with surrounding landscaping – it’s performance as a natural golf green incorporating breaks and borrows is vital.

The putting and chipping green design is the same size as the right-hand-side putting green outside Wear Park house. The synthetic green will measure nearly 500 metre squared, with a large bunker as well as varying chipping pods around the perimeter.

Chris Jones, General Manager of Exeter Golf and Country Club said, “We are incredibly excited about this latest development for our golf members. We are privileged to be launching such a unique practise and coaching facility at a time when our golf membership is so successful. Our men’s golf section is full and even has a waiting list and our ladies section is also very healthy, so we are delighted to be able to give our members a brand new practice range, chipping green and short game area so close to our actual golf course.”

Southwest Greens UK were selected as the main contractor for the ‘Topsham Golf Practice Facility’ as they are the undisputed market leaders having successfully designed and installed several commercial synthetic golf practice facilities including the largest synthetic green in the UK, along with numerous residential greens such as Gareth Bale’s private course.

The ‘Topsham Golf Practice Facility’ will be open seven days a week, with a Golf Pro Reception desk, vending machines and parking for up to 30 cars.

Exeter Golf and Country Club also features a fully-enclosed indoor golf simulator studio in the South West enabling golfers to play a round at some of the best international golf courses in the world and improve their play through in-depth coaching analysis.

Updates will follow about the progress of the development, but at present the ‘Topsham Golf Practice Facility’ is expected to open from mid-Autumn.

Exeter Golf and Country Club has 5,000 members using the club for swimming, fitness, rackets and golf.
