After Storm Hannah interfered with planned junior tennis competitions on Saturday afternoon, fortunately the weather cleared for two events on Sunday.
First was the Wimbledon Draw Tournaments. With all of the courts full for a social doubles tournament there were many very tight matches throughout the morning. The final scores were incredibly close but the winners were revealed by Tennis Captain, Simon Goldsmith, as Martin James, Kate Adams and Fiona Gibson.
Following the tournament, the draw for Wimbledon tickets took place. The full list of winners and reserves can be found on the tennis noticeboard.Information about how to opt in for next year’s ballot will be published in the autumn. The next doubles event will take place on Sunday 19th May. Members are invited to sign up now at reception.
The Wimbledon Draw was followed by the first Nexus tournament of the summer season. There was representation from five other local clubs (Bovey Tracey Tennis Club, Sidmouth Tennis Club, Taunton Tennis Club, Tarka Tennis Club and David Lloyd Tennis).
The first round produced two of the closest matches of the event. Alex Cleasby (Bovey Tracey Tennis Club) and Jaz Goodwill (Exeter Golf and Country Club), both playing in their first Nexus event, produced some great tennis. After splitting the first two sets it came down to a championship tie-break which Alex won 10-6.
The other match involved Ryan Gagg (Tarka Tennis Club) and Ted Calder (Bovey Tracey Tennis Club). All of Ryan’s matches went to a championship tie-break but it was the opening match which lasted the longest thanks to some epic rallies. Ryan prevailed 10-7 in the tie-break.
There’s a lot more junior tennis taking place this weekend at Exeter Golf and Country Club with a 16U Nexus Tournament, 10U and 12U Team Challenge events and home Devon Team Tennis matches for our 10U and 14U boys teams.
