Winter Tennis League Review

Mar 27, 2019 | Jenni Ashford

With only one match to play, and with the summer season just over a week away, here’s a review of a successful winter season for Exeter Golf and Country Club’s league teams.

The men’s A team won the winter division 1 title for the fifth consecutive year remaining unbeaten throughout. They also extended their impressive home record to only one defeat in six years. There was a third-place finish for the men’s B team (captained by Maurice Salzmann) in the same division. The men’s C team (capt. Simon Goldsmith) finished mid-table in division 3.

There was a double promotion for the ladies’ teams. The C team, led by Tracey Agutter, finished as runners-up in division 4 by virtue of winning one more match than third-placed Budleigh Salterton who had also finished on 53 points. Jacqui Warrender’s B team were ten points clear of their closest challenger as they gained promotion to division 2.

The most impressive record of all the club’s teams belongs to the mixed C team. Chris Goodwill’s squad completed a perfect season by winning all ten of their matches. Having also secured promotion in the summer, they will now move up to division 5 next winter. The mixed B team finished mid-table in division 2 and the A team were narrowly beaten to the division 1 title by Victoria Park.

With over 20 teams competing in various adult, senior and junior leagues this summer, it promises to be a busy few months for the club’s tennis section. Good luck to all members representing the club.
