Woodbury Half Marathon

Feb 12, 2020 | Jenni Ashford

Assistant Spa Manager, Tanya has completed the first two of her twelve challenges to raise money for ‘Blood Bikes’ and, bizarrely, celebrate her 40th birthday year.

Last Saturday night, as Storm Ciara took hold and most people were enjoying a cosy wine (or two) after a long Dry January, Tanya threw caution to the wind and dive head first into the rain, mud and darkness of Woodbury Common.

Tanya, supported by Spa Manager, Amber and Systems Manager, Martyn, headed off into the night to run the Battle of Woodbury – a half marathon night run.

By all accounts, it took trail running to a torturous new level across mud, sand, rocks, water, grass and woodlands – in the dark – and in the wind, rain and cold.

Tanya said, “It was emotional! Amber was not best pleased with me (after all, I persuaded her to do it!) but we finished it – in one piece. It was a lonely run in places – you often end up alone and wondering if you’re ever going to make it to the end. I aimed for 2hrs 30 as normally do a normal road run half in 2hrs, this bad boy stripped me down 2hrs 44 mins! I’ve had some great support and sponsorship from members and spa clients to this spurred me and I am ready for the next challenge! Thank you!”

The background to Tanya’s 12 Month Challenge

Tanya lives in Exmouth with her daughter and husband, Jim. Jim has been a motorbike volunteer for ‘Blood Bikes’, Devon Freewheelers EVS, for many years providing a free out of hours courier service to the NHS across Devon. The Blood Bikes carry whole blood, blood and other medical samples, medication, emergency medical equipment, tissue samples for cross matching before transplant operations and donor breast milk for premature babies. The charity receives no funding from the NHS for this service and relies on public donations to be able to continue to operate.

This is where Tanya has stepped in. Tanya wants to raise as much money as possible for the charity which is why she is aiming to complete a challenge a month, for 12 months.

Here is what she has planned:

January – Dirty Devil Stampede – 7 miles
February – Battle of Woodbury – 13 miles
March – Totally Muddy – 10k
April – Jurassic Trail – East meets West – 10k/13 miles
May – Rat Race Dirty Weekender – 20 miles
June – Mountain climb – 1 of the 3 peaks
July – Salty Seadog Triathlon
August – Tough Mudder West – 10 miles & 25 obstacles
September – Great North Run – 13 miles
October – Commando Challenge – 10k
November – Cornish Marathon – 26 miles
December – Portsmouth Coastal Marathon – 26 miles

Any donations would be gratefully received…and of course, we will keep you updated with her progress.
